The Medal of St. Benedict
Marie-Julie (date?): "The sun(which often appeared in her ecstasies) says again that in the vicinity, itdoes not say here, but in the vicinity, the ears of wheat will blacken, and thatthe crop which seeds at the end of May and at the beginning of June, to reap atthe end of August and in September, he says that this crop will go up just toflowing and that the flower will remain a considerable time, producing nograins and no appearance of crop; it will be void.
From the beginning of this appearance ofthe ear combing with hair of black, says the sun, the only means to bringthrough a part of the crop, if it is not all shaded in black, will be to seedin the form of a cross, the medal of the Great Saint Benedict." (i.e.,that medals are to be spread in the land in the shape of a cross.)
The Story of St. Benedict's Medal andits Symbolic Letters.
The exact time and date of the making ofthe first Saint Benedict Medal are not clear.
Saint Vincent de Paul, who died in 1660,appears to have been acquainted with the Medal and the Sisters of Charityfounded by him have worn it attached to their rosary beads, and for many yearsit was made in France for them alone.
At some point there were letters foundon the back of the medal, which remained a mystery until a manuscript datingback to 1415 was found at Metten Abbey in Bavaria in 1647.
The manuscript contains the firstrecorded use of the exorcism formula Vade retro satana ("Stepback,Satan"), and the letters were found to correspond to this phrase.
This is the story: certain women whowere prosecuted for witchcraft declared that they had been unable to do harmwhere there was a cross, and the St. Michael's Benedictine Abbey in Metten wasparticularly exempt from their influence.
A search of the monastery turned upcrosses painted on the walls with the formula's(Vade retro satana) initials.
The meaning of those letters remained amystery for some time, until the complete verses were found in a manuscriptdating to 1415 in the abbey's library, next to an image of St. Benedict. Thesame formula was later found in an Austrian manuscript from the 14th century.
The medal was formally approved by PopeBenedict XIV in 1741 and the Jubliee medal was struck in 1880, in remembranceof the 1400th anniversary of St. Benedict’s birth. The initials of the Vaderetro satana formula have been found on Saint Benedict Medals at least since1780.

Like other mystics, Marie-Julieconfirmed this when she could tell the difference between a blessed and aunblessed object during her ecstasies, even when a rosary that had been blessed, but had a new crucifix on it that was not blessed, she could tell thedifference.
