Jonah 1 The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 上主的话再次传给约纳说: 2 "Set out for the great city of "你起身往尼尼微大城去,向他们宣告我晓谕你的事。" 3 So Jonah made ready and went to 约纳便依从上主的话,起身去了尼尼微。尼尼微在天主前是一座大城,须要三天的行程。 4 1 Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day's walk announcing, "Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed," 约纳开始进城,行了一天的路程,宣布说:"还有四十天,尼尼微就要毁灭了。" 5 when the people of 尼尼微人便信仰了天主,立即宣布禁食,从大到小,都身披苦衣。 6 When the news reached the king of 当这消息传到尼尼微王那里,他便起来,离开自己的宝座,脱去长服,披上苦衣,坐在灰土中; 7 Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles: "Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep, shall taste anything; they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water. 然后命令以君王的谕令和其大臣的名义,在尼尼微宣布说:"人、牲畜、牛羊,都可不可吃什么;不可牧放,也不可喝水。 8 2 Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God; every man shall turn from his evil way and from the violence he has in hand. 人和牲畜都应身披苦衣,人要恳切呼求天主,更要转离自己的邪路,放弃手中的暴行。 9 Who knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath, so that we shall not perish." 谁知道天主也许会转意怜悯,收回自己的烈怒,使我们不致灭亡。" 10 When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out. 天主看到他们所行的事,看到他们离开自己的邪路,遂怜悯他们,不将已宣布的灾祸,降在他们身上。 Footnotes(注解) 1 [4] Shall be destroyed: the Hebrew expression reminds the reader of the "overthrowing" of the wicked cities, Sodom and Gomorrah, by a special act of God. 2 [8] Beast . . . sackcloth: the animals carried the signs of this repentance, as on occasions of joy they bore garlands. |
